Lenovo is gearing up to update their mobile workstation, the W-series, with the new ThinkPad W701 and its dual-screen counterpart, the W701ds. Leaked internally, specs for the new machines have found their way into our hands speaking of a release date for next Thursday on February 25th.

From what it looks likem both machines are quite powerful as they run on the latest Intel Extreme series CPUs, have four memory slots for up to 16GB DDR3 RAM, bring SSD options (up to 250GB) and new graphics cards to choose from, the NVIDIA Quadro FX 2800M and the 3800M. On top of that there are now only 4 standard USB 2.0 ports (with the fifth being upgraded to USB 3.0) and eSATA support, the same 200nit WXGA+ LCD display or the WUXGA screen with a 100% NTSC color gamut 280 nit of brightness.

Price wise the new mobile workstations won’t come in cheap, so better be prepared to shell in some $2,000 (for the ThinkPad W701, and more for the W701ds) when they get released next week.

Having only recently posted about the Apple TriBook MacBook Concept its interesting to note that IBM/Lenovo have just announced their new ThinkPad W700 series mobile workstation laptopwhich distinguishes itself from the stock W700 in coming complete with an integrated 10.6” (diagonal) secondary 1280 x 768 resolution display supplementing its main 17” 1920 x 1200 WUXGA screen.

The high-end IBM Lenovo ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation comes with a veritable host of configurations with the primary features including a choice of Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Quad Core Q9100 CPUs, a choice of Nvidia Quadro FX 2700M or Quadro FX 3700M GPUs, an integrated Wacom onboard palm rest digitizer and pen, a 64GB SSD paired with dual RAID HDD high-speed storage (up to 350GB), dual link DVI and 4GB of PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM.
Aimed, as one would gather from the brief run down of key features noted above, very much at professionals – and especially those looking for a portable graphics workstation (the ThinkPad W700 comes with Integrated color calibration as well as the aforementioned onboard palm rest digitizer and pen) information concerning pricing is yet to surface, though the IBM Lenovo ThinkPad W700 is set for release this month, but few would doubt that this powerhouse of a machine won’t be cheap.
